One such side project includes collaboration with both Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of the alternative band R.E.M. and together they formed a project called Automatic Baby in the year 1993. He also has worked with fellow band mate Adam Clayton on a re-recording of the   Mission: Impossible theme. The movie was released in the year 1996. He along with his band U2 have won many awards including a total of 22 coveted Grammy awards.

Mullen began his drumming in the year 1970 at 9 under the instruction of Irish drummer Joe Bonnie. Later he also started his training under Bonnie’s daughter Monica. He used to play in a marching band from Dublin called the Artane Boys Band and the influences of the marching band can be heard on several U2 songs like “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. Larry Mullen

The initial line up of U2 comprised of Mullen, Paul “Bono” Hewson, David “The Edge” Evans, Dik Evans, Adam Clayton, Ivan McCormick and Peter Martin. The last two being Mullen’s friends. U2 was originally called the “Larry Mullen Band”, but the name was quickly changed to “Feedback” and later to “The Hype” was a 5-piece. The band changed its name to U2 finally at a formal farewell concert meant for Dik Evans and became what they are today. Mullen’s drumming style started evolving after he formed U2. In the initial days of the band, his contributions to U2 was limited to fills as well as to drum rolls and much later he got involved with the song writing procedure especially with Adam the bassist. The duo went onto do several projects together. Mullen has also combined his musical talents with Adam. CBS Records wanted Mullen to be fired before they could sign up the band and the band decided not to fire him. Thus, this fired up Mullen and he became more and more involved with the song writing techniques of U2.

With the soaring popularity of U2, Mullen added the “Junior” suffix to his name in order to stop any sort of confusion with his father who was also named Larry Mullen and he was getting many big tax bills that were in actuality meant for his son. Mullen is not married, but has lived with Ann Acheson who is his girlfriend for more than 2 decades. The couple has three children, Aaron Elvis who was born in 1995, Ava born in the year 1998 and Ezra who was born in 2001.
